Band: Various Artists

CD Title: Yesterday and Today: A 50th Anniversary Tribute to YES

Label: RecPlay Records (2018)

Rating: Spot-On! A Fitting Tribute.

This one of at least two tribute albums released at the close of 2018 that celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of one of the Progressive Rock genres founding classic bands – namely YES. This collection of various artists is shepherded by known Prog producers and performers Dave Kerzner and Fernando Perdomo. This collection of thirteen tunes pulled from YES’ whole career includes not only the “usual suspects” like “Yours is no Disgrace” and “Starship Trooper” but also plenty of lesser known or unexpected treats such as “Machine Messiah” and “Cinema” plus others. So over all what can you say? Each of these tunes is performed in a polished and experienced fashion creating seventy four minutes of YES music that sticks quite close to the originals. In many respects it’s note-for-note. Every so often a vocal tone or instrument selection will alter the feel of the original but by and large that didn’t seem to be the goal. No, they wanted this 50th Anniversary Tribute to YES to reflect and replicate all those original varied sounds. The performances are solid and the production is super-clean and spot on. Boasting a stellar list of participants: Jon Davison, Tony Kaye, Jay Schellen, Billy Sherwood Robert Berry, Francis Dunnery, Nick D’Virgilio, Geoff Downes, Steve Hackett, Marco Minnemann, Pat Sansone, not to mention both Kerzner and Perdomo this disc makes a fitting tribute indeed. A must purchase for YES fans everywhere. Recommended.
